The Door of This House

  • The Door of This House was commissioned by the Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the school. The text was adapted from the prayer inscribed on the Upper School’s Chapel doors:

    O God,
Make the door of this house
Wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship
Narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and strife
Make its threshold smooth enough to be no stumbling block
to children, nor to straying feet, but
Rugged and strong enough to turn back the tempter’s power
O God, make the door of this house
the gateway to Thine eternal kingdom.

The music is intended to reflect the desire for community, fellowship and
inclusiveness that characterize the text, as well as the hope for strength and
permanence. Its slow, steady, slightly swinging pace – reminiscent of a
processional march, coupled with the persistent “hammering” motive in the
piano and the steady growth in energy and intensity in the chorus, represent
the process of building the new chapel, and are meant to invoke the spirit of
all those who have shared a vision and achieved it together through
cooperation, hard work, persistence, and faith.
